School of Opulence Presents: Beyond the Break Episode 1
Beyond the Break: Conversations for Family Resilience and Restoration is a new series from The School of Opulence’s Opulence for Everyone Mental Health Program, creating compassionate spaces for families navigating the journey of accepting and affirming their LGBTQ+ loved ones.
For our first conversation, we’re joined by our Quality Mental Health Professional, Alex H.; School of Opulence Founder, Vance White; and Vershe Dixon, an African American bisexual woman, alongside her mother, Pastor Sharese Whonry.
Together, they explore the deeply personal intersection of family, faith, the church, and LGBTQ+ identity—reflecting on Vershe’s coming-out journey, the role the church played in shaping their experiences, and what it can look like for families to move toward greater understanding, affirmation, and healing.
For many LGBTQ+ people, coming out can bring families face-to-face with questions of love, fear, culture, and faith. When affirmation is withheld, those wounds can have lasting impacts on mental health and belonging. But when families choose to listen, learn, and affirm, they can become one of the strongest sources of resilience.
Beyond the Break brings LGBTQ+ family members, loved ones, faith leaders, and mental health professionals into honest dialogue—not to avoid the difficult conversations, but to move through them with empathy, truth, and love.
Because restoring families helps restore our communities.
